“Nat Lazzarotto is an intelligent and thoughtful musician whose playing not only references the past but points the way to the future”

- Alex Dean, Saxophonist

Nat Lazzarotto is a trombonist, composer, and music educator located in Calgary, AB, Canada who has been honing his craft for over a decade. His sound bridges the gap between postbop trombonists JJ Johnson and Curtis Fuller and the more modern sounds of Elliot Mason and Marshall Gilkes. As a composer, Nat has developed a pensive voice, combining the hardbop sounds of groups such as the Jazz Messengers with new textures and sounds from modern Canadian jazz music.

Holding a Bachelor’s Degree with Honours from Humber College, Nat Lazzarotto has had the pleasure of studying with notable musicians such as Al Kay, William Carn, and John MacLeod, as well as engaging in the thriving Toronto music scene. He has received several accolades, most notably the Gordon and Ann Wragg Scholarship, and the Dave Stillwell Arranging Award.

His work has involved performances with Christian McBride, John Scofield, Emilie-Claire Barlow, the Sonuskapos Jazz Orchestra, the Calgary Jazz Orchestra, the Prime Time Big Band, and the self-driven Nat Lazzarotto Jazz Orchestra. Most recently, he has shown an interest in very small ensemble playing, trio and duo specifically, developing interesting ways of exploring those limitations.
